We’re right in the heart of Bangkok’s central business district for the latest episode of Bangkok Bites for some très chic drinking and dining nestled among the skyscraper jungle. The upscale MahaNakhon development is fast becoming one of the city’s iconic lifestyle hubs starting with the opening of the Dean & Deluca flagship in the CUBE, followed by Michelin-starred L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon. Another stylish addition to the collective is Vogue Lounge Bangkok, named in conjunction with the famed fashion magazine.
This is the first Vogue Lounge by the Conde Nast group in the world, which is probably testament to the city’s status as a growing global fashion and dining destination, while retaining their identity of high sophistication and glamor. As one would expect from the name, this is the kind of place where the trendiest, most well-dressed Bangkokians would want to eat, drink, and be seen in its plush surroundings. And yup, somehow they still let me in and were pretty welcoming at that (a big contrast from my visit to Osha).
The cosmopolitan lounge setting encompasses an indoor long bar space, smaller secluded sections, and a breezy outdoor terrace surrounded by neighboring towering structures such as the soon-to-be-opened MahaNakhorn Tower that will be Bangkok’s tallest building. Slabs of marble combined with dark furnishings, brass accents, candles and of course fashion photography adorning the walls certainly creates a feeling of a luxe, exclusive hideaway elevated away from the chaos of the office crowds and traffic-lined streets in a convenient location for the suited-and-booted crowd to drink and party when dusk falls.
We were given the privilege of being the first ones to taste their new food and drinks pairing menu, due to be unveiled in May after the final tweaks have been made. The concept is ‘fashion food’ – beautifully presented nibbles designed for sharing and to complement some of their old-school classic cocktails. These scrumptious snack-sized bites have been created by Michelin Award-winning French Chef Vincent Thierry, with premium ingredients from around the world such as foie gras, Boston lobster, and black truffle featuring across the menu.
They may come in model sized portions but were actually rather fun and interesting to try out with the array of flavors and textures packed in each tasty mouthful, and then rounding off each plate with its partnering drink. One such offering featured tender chunks of Australian beef tenderloin in a BBQ sauce skewered together with baby Portobello mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and deep fried mashed potato balls accompanied by a ‘Port Manhattan’ (port wine, bourbon, cranberry juice, bitters) that is a winning combination with the rich meat.
Another star item is the wordy ‘Marinated Salmon, Celeriac Panna Cotta’, consisting of salmon tartare artfully presented in a cone, and topped with a horseradish cream and salmon roe to resemble miniature ice creams. The clean finish of the drink pairing, ‘Bamboo’ (dry sherry and dry vermouth), also hits the right notes with the food’s light herb and seafood flavors. While the ‘high-fashion’ concept may be too skinny for some, these drinking and dining duos make an exciting option to the Bangkok nightlife scene that lends itself well for socializing whilst eating in style!
