In this episode of Bangkok Bites the reservation-making smartphone app, Chope, brings us to hip and happening Thonglor. The area has been the epicentre of Bangkok’s most frequented lifestyle hotspots along Sukhumvit Road away from Soi 11, with a high concentration of cafes, bars, and nightclubs spanning Soi Thonglor / Sukhumvit 55. This uppity, affluent neighborhood draws in the brunch and nightlife crowds on a regular basis with newer, trendier places popping up all the time that it’s almost hard to keep up with them without emptying your wallet out in the process.
Community malls with a food focus are the latest arrival to the Thonglor scene with The Commons nearby (at Thonglor 17, see the youtube video here), and 72 Courtyard offering combined dining and social spaces under one roof. They’re exciting because along with them they’ve brought some of the city’s most well loved eateries, opening new branches as part of these projects. Levels of concrete and urban greenery create open, chilled communal areas as a cool place to hang out with friends, while enjoying some food, drinks, and a buzzing atmosphere.
Lady Brett, the renowned Sathorn cocktail and “so called barbecue joint” is one familiar name to join the 72 Courtyard collective. To give their menu much needed new life they’ve brought along Australian chef Jess Barnes, formerly of Opposite Mess Hall.
As a result, Thonglor’s Lady Brett is not an exact copy of the Sathorn location as Chef Barnes puts his own spin on the dishes and both Lady Brett and Uncle above shed the cozy Sathorn privacy for more seating and faster pace in Thonglor. You get a taste of this immediately, for example, if you don’t want to take the stairs to the upper level, there’s an elevator for lazy, able bodied people going directly to the entrance of the restaurant. Inside is a classy, yet cozy setup of plush leather seats, warm wood furnishings, and decorative hanging lights, while a large glass wall dividing it from the courtyard space creates a fish tank-like view of the space from the outdoor tables.
The menu of salads, small plates, burgers, veggie sides, and grilled assorted cuts of meat and seafood is compact but provides enough variety for a satisfying meal. The beetroot salad for example was perfection in itself with thickly sliced discs of spice pickled beetroot combined with pistachios, sunflower seeds, pickled serrano chilis, pennywort, crumbled sheep’s milk curd, and bits of pomelo for a colorful starter that is refreshing and tasty with its various textures and flavors. There is also a substantial drinks menu where, like the original Sathorn branch, one can order libations from upstairs by the guys at U.N.C.L.E. or visit them afterwards for a strategic post-meal tipple.
Another highlight is the chicken burger (320 baht) consisting of a juicy fillet that is perfectly seasoned and fried in a buttermilk batter, and layered together with spicy chipotle mustard sauce, horseradish mayo, and pickled cucumbers in a soft bun. Forget fast food, this is what a real chicken sandwich should look and taste like!
