Be careful when you’re hunting authentic Thai food. This is an extreme sport whose hazards may ruin first dates and new underwear by infusing you with more spiciness and pungency than you’re meant to contain. Many a tragedy has also occurred by not carefully pairing Thai food with alcoholic spirits. But if you happen to love real beer, real Thai food, and opportunities to go underwear shopping, Beervana has an event for you.
On October 2nd, the craft beer company is teaming up with Bo.lan, one of Bangkok’s top Thai restaurants, to challenge Bangkok’s foodies to a drunken duel of gourmet Thai cuisine and hop heavy, bitter IPAs from Stone Brewery. The six course dinner dubbed “Kick Ass IPAs Meet Thai Food“, accosts your beer drinking conscience with an event flyer featuring this giant footnote:
“This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful you will have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory — maybe something you with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.“
That’s an insult no hipster could resist. And just like the flyer, the pairings themselves seek to offend and inspire.
Each of the carefully selected courses features beautifully presented and traditionally made Thai food, almost surely outside of your typical dining repertoire. I’m not allowed to give away too many spoilers, but I joined Chef Dylan for a mini-preview of the event. One of the early courses included pairing a Northern favorite called nam ngiew (a curry made from dried red cotton flower pistols and congealed pork blood), with Stone’s Delicious IPA. The smokey and spicy curry is just a warm up for the main courses packing even more heat and flavor. Be assured the menu doesn’t shy away from chili, kapi (stinky fermented fish paste), or even Thai food’s often neglected bitter garnishes, seeking either to compliment or contrast the flavors in the beer. The event is sure to be a mouthful, should you think yourself worthy.
