This week Thonglor’s Game Over Lounge held a private preview tasting for a new line of imported craft beers. The lounge known for it’s retro gaming, beer pong, and for having Daniel Thaiger burgers on it’s menu, hosted food press and beer enthusiasts as local craft beer importer Beervana announced plans to add IPA-focused Stone Brewing Company’s beers to it’s ever expanding range of brews. The timing coincides with the third anniversary of craft beer in Thailand and there’s a series of events planned to celebrate. But first a bit of preview sipping…
Although they plan to bring many of the 120 beers Stone Brewery currently offers to Bangkok, to start the focus is on introducing the brand with six beers to choose from: Stone IPA, ‘Go To’ IPA, Cali-Belgique IPA, Delicious IPA, Arrogant Bastard Ale, and Ruination Double IPA 2.0.
That’s a whole lotta IPA (aka Indian Pale Ale) style beers, the hop heavy and often citrusy brews so closely associated with the craft beer explosion and summertime. Besides Thailand’s year ’round summer, the IPAs are also likely to piggy back off the familiarity of Thai consumers with Belgian beers (think Stella, Hoegaarden, Duvel, etc.) that are available in so many of Bangkok’s bars.
What to Expect
Expect beers that are heavy on hops, easy to drink and noticeably bitter. The introductory lineup will also help people new to IPAs distinguish the styles they prefer. For example the standard Stone IPA, which some expats may already be familiar with, has a European cousin in the Cali-Belgique IPA and will likely be popular among Thais (the two beers are identical brews, but Belgian style yeast is used in the latter). Finally, expect to see the limits of what’s possible with IPA style beers tested first with Arrogant Bastard Ale, a bourbon barrel aged IPA and the intensely bitter Ruination Double IPA 2.0. All of that bitterness and hops can be debilitating on the palate, so you’ll definitely want to pair them with food. Expect they’ll be a good match to burgers or whatever is grilling nearby from your favorite street food vendor.
The tasting was a teaser for the launch, but there’s an official set out of events to celebrate the arrival of the brand in Thailand including:
– Oct 2nd, Stone Craft Beer and Thai Food Pairing Menu at Bo.lan
– Oct 3rd, Official Launch Party at Craft (Sukhumvit 23)
– TBA, Stone Craft Beer Release Party at The Riverside (Chiang Mai)
Once launched the beer will be available at bars featuring craft beer in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Phuket.
