Above Eleven Quick Review:
I’ve made more than a few trips to rooftop bar Above Eleven, Bangkok’s only Peruvian and Japanese (Nikkei cuisine) fusion restaurant. The legacy of Japanese migration in Peru, along with influence from other ethnicities from all over the world, have made their imprint on Peruvian cuisine. The focus of Nikkei cuisine is on seafood in the form ceviche and sushi, some traditional, but mostly featuring distinctly Peruvian ingredients such as a variety of species of potatoes, the super grain quinoa, and the tangy ‘tiger’s milk’ chili sauce aka leche de tigre (see more of it in this old post on Above Eleven).
When I visit Above Eleven it’s usually because I have friends in town who crave drinks with a view. They usually comprise with me and settle on going to Soi 11 when they can tell I’m becoming nauseated by the idea of another trip across town to State Tower. This occasion, however, was more work related as I ended on Above Eleven rooftop terrace while it was closed to help with their Valentine’s Day food photoshoot. Fortunately we were only shooting stills because leaning over this food for an hour and a half before we could eat was torture.
I love the Nikkei version of nigiri, known as tiraditos, which surrounds seafood in a pool of leche de tigre, so the scallops were the first to go. Then I swapped between digging out the sea bass in the ceviche bowl to cherishing each bite of the tuna. There was too much of the quinoa puree, which is much lighter than a typical mash, but still filling. I’m not sure if that was typical or only to give the dish extra height for the photoshoot. The wagyu was of course tender, but had plenty of bite and that the chimichurri had a chance to soak in while we worked wasn’t a bad thing. Leaning over pot bellied on a rooftop bar in the middle of the afternoon after getting sweaty taking food photos may be as romantic as it gets for me!
