I feel like I left you guys hanging in the last Daniel Thaiger excursion when I recommended you be on the look out for their mac n’cheese burger. Let’s hope my wisest readers took note and tried this monster before me. For the rest of you slackers, here’s an update for ya coming in true food porn form, including answers to common questions about this burger spot.
Food trucks in Bangkok? Wait, really?
I know, I know. Don’t hyperventilate, we’ll get through this. But let’s go ahead and admit this ain’t the Bangkok you used to know. While the city has always been on the move with it’s food, it’s only til recently a truck has arrived that looks like it’s around to stay (we had a korean taco thing going for a minute, but it fizzled fast a few years ago). There’s more on the way too and that’s a good things for all of us having a hard time deciding between overpriced cafe food or overpriced Japanese food for dinner. That’s especially the case if you live and work in the Sukhumvit area, where when you need to get fed on a budget, the pickins’ get real slim.
Where can I get me one ov’ dem burgers?
Now don’t got off telling people the food truck explosion has arrived in Bangkok. It pains me to read those headlines, unless of course those writers are referring to the pickup trucks selling fruit and random noodles from neighborhood to neighborhood. If that’s the case, food trucks actually hit Bangkok streets years ago, they just may night be in your neighborhood. Maybe I wouldn’t mind a furious speaker blaring through my window at 9:30am, assuring non-Thai speakers the end of the world has begun, if they were selling burgers instead of lychee. As a matter of fact, I think I’d run out the house in my bed sheets, but we’re not on that food truck level yet. At the moment you can usually only get your greasy fingers on a Daniel Thaiger burger by hunting them down in Sukhumvit’s Soi 38, from 5:30- til about 10pm, just near the end of the street food carts (see the map below, but I doubt you’ll need it). They do occasionally pop up in other places, but they usually will announce it on the Daniel Thaiger facebook page first.
Burgers on Sukhumvit 38 with Bangkok’s best street food too?
Look asshole, I don’t know who writes these damn questions, but please don’t insinuate the shit you get on that soi is the best of what Bangkok has to offer. I’m not saying the food on the soi is all that shabby, I’ll give you that there’s a few good places, but nothing worth giving them the ‘Bangkok’s Best’ title. The soi is famous because it’s where people falling out of the Thonglor and Ekkamai’s nightclubs so often end up before heading home. So you can believe the drunk people and a couple of writers who don’t live here if you wanna, but you don’t hear me spreading that lie. The plus of the street food is that while you’re waiting on your burger to be made, you can down two or three Thai meals as appetizers.
How long did you wait for your Daniel Thaiger burger?
I ordered at about 5:50pm and had my burger an hour later, with an extra few minutes for the two burgers I ordered to go. Along the way there seemed to be some confusion about who ordered what and people adding to their order delayed things a bit. This wait is longer than normal because of the mac n’cheese special, but I was prepared and finished a bag of gourmet popcorn and chatted with people hanging out while waiting. I definitely suggest walking the soi and grabbing some snacks while you wait if you know it’ll be awhile. Other people had smoothies or ran errands while the burgers were made.
Can you tell me more about this sweet sounding mac n’cheese burger?
Ok, they’re officially calling it the “Jalapeño Bacon Mac ‘N Cheese Burger” and when it appears, it’s usually a surprise. They give their regular squeeze of sauce on the bottom of the burger, but instead of lettuce, jalapeños are thrown in. The burger patty is the same all imported beef patty used in the other burgers, only it’s topped macaroni and finally the crispy, thick slices of bacon before the bun caps the burger off. The monster combo is delicious, although I’ll ask for extra jalapeños and extra sauce on mine the next round. That’s because your mouth gets dry about half way in and I caught myself reaching for my imaginary beer (sidenote: this may or may not be a side effect of trying to swallow the burger whole).
Can I have my Daniel Thaiger burger triple stacked with diamonds in the back?
Errrrr, good question. I kinda want to supersize this and add all the magic items possible. This is usually not a problem on non-special days, but when there’s an extra long queue, you may want to minimize the number of requests, unless you’re the first dude on the scene. On this particular evening, if you showed up around 7pm, just an hour and a half after they opened, the mac n’cheese burgers were probably already sold out. That said if you hang out long enough and you’re around when the regulars are ordering, you’ll hear all kinds of things requested!
