After eating a ton of meat and drinking my share of wine at Tabasco Wine Bar, the following morning I opted for a lighter meal. Popular with locals in downtown Rayong, is a small vegetarian shop doing a daily $1 buffet, noodles, sweets, and selling all sorts of healthy food products.
The place, which doesn’t appear to have any real name, is most popular in the morning for people claiming meatless breakfast. There’s tons of selection and I’ve found from trying a few things is the flavors range pretty widely from bland and uninteresting to ‘wake you up’ spicy. Be on the look out for the vegetarian renditions of your favorite Thai food and normally meaty Thai dishes. One such option is the noodle stand which features a few different types of popular soups, such as the egg noodles and wonton soup (my choice), and even duck noodles. The prices are more expensive than the buffet ranging from 40-60 baht per bowl.
Turns out the noodles are really tasty. I thought I wouldn’t be able to eat the noodles without throwing in additional chili flakes, but I enjoyed the savory sesame flavoring the noodle broth had. The fake meat in the bowl, a variety of textures, was also surprising tasty and I’d say the bowl definitely rivaled the other vegetarian noodles I’ve tried in Bangkok. Once you’ve chomped down some healthy stuff, you can feast on the sticky coconut dessert (ขนมปลากริมไข่เต่า). The noodles are mixed in a coconut syrup and the while ones are salty, while the brown, palm sugar tasting noodles are sweet. They mix together for a sweet and salty combo, available only from a vender who stops his cart in front of the shop to sell to the many customers going in and out.
The buffet is a dollar and you’ll need to clear your own table. There’s also a place where you can donate if you think your meal was superior or you just appreciate what the restaurant is trying to do. Check this place out while you’re in Rayong, especially if you need a meal to make penance for all the seafood you ate while staying here.
Vegetarian Buffet Restaurant ร้านอาหารมังสวิรัติ
Directions: This restaurant is located in Rayong about 100 meters into Sukhumvit Nakornrayong 46, if you enter from the main road called Sukhumvit. People know it because it’s near the Siam Commercial Bank which can be seen from the main road. I’d suggest going early and grabbing things while they’re still hot and available.
Editor’s Note: Since there’s so little good information on quality restaurants in Rayong, I’ve started a small list of Rayong’s top restaurants and bars.
