The real name of this late night haunt is almost unknown and there begins the magic folks.
Post club hopping locals mostly call it by ‘Abu’ and if you’re lost heading to this mamak stall and you’re asking people based on the original name (Restoran K.S.B. Cahaya) you’ll never find it.
It’s located not far from the main Georgetown drag on Jalan Dato Koyah, in an abandoned parking lot someone put a gate around and covered with a flimsy tarp.
Aren’t you loving the sound of this already?
However shady this sounds so far, I guarantee it is definitely the most bizarre and awesomely unhealthy roti I’ve ever seen or experienced.
Maybe since healthwise it’s a bad idea to dessertify roti in the first place, Abu decided what-the-hell— how could we possibly make it worse?
Well, they then came up with a giant menu list of things awful for your health that just might make you smile the entire rest of the night.
Feast your eyes on this greasy shit my friends:
Giant chunks of butter flying around and fried eggs on EVERYTHING.
Onions and cheese dropped in roti and cooked, then dropped in roti and cooked again. (That’s not a typo.)
Giant tissue rotis and small standard rotis covered in condensed milk and slammed with sausages, jellies, and assorted candy.
Order any random thing on the menu and it would probably put your usual banana roti to shame.
Here’s a few of the interesting sounding menu choices:
Roti Melenium (see the pic on foursquare)
Roti Hot Dog
And so on…
They’ve also got nasi kandar and all types of fried mee noodles and fried rice if thats what you’re craving too.
I guess this could also be the trend in some places in Malaysia, but I’ve never stumbled across anyone else slinging roti with such a zeal for butter, eggs, grease, sausages, and candy.
I showed up around 11pm and ordered the ‘murk’ — what I affectionally call the murtabak stuffed with onion and cheese. It’s basically a stuffed roti that ends up being fried twice.
Delicious and filling, as advertised. I ended up downing two lemon teas with it, which were also great.
The rain didn’t make this the best hangout and as expected there’s plenty of hygiene violations. Still, like my other favorite late night spots in Penang, it’s going to be part of ‘the routine’ whenever I’m in town.
